Systems, Sets, Synergy
From quantum to cosmic, the physical world is comprised of the coexistence of contrasting elements. I compose my mixed media paintings this way, exploiting the interaction of diverse handmade paint mixtures, application techniques, and unexpected materials–thread, metal, gold leaf. Using wood and its inherent properties as a substrate allows me to achieve the dimensionality vital to these complex objects. I am attracted to logically derived systems and patterns found repeatedly in nature, and man’s attempt to imitate them. Both conceptually and technically my work encapsulates the depth of many layers, reflecting the immensity of the universe.

A new show of oil paintings by two artists for September. Opening night, First Friday, 6-10pm, runs through the month.
Ekaterina Popova’s series Rooms for the Restless explores the world of dreams by focusing on a personal experience of reoccurring night visions. The situations in the paintings depict the intrusion of nature, specifically ocean waves, into safe human environments. The use of glazes and unusual color creates a dream-like world for the viewer to explore.
Daniel Paquet: My paintings are scenes of very close friends and places I lived and grew up. They are places I’m familiar with yet I try to paint them as if I’m taking them in for the first time. I try to instill in my paintings a sense of memory, as if memory is being obscured or slipping away. I want to keep certain aspects of my paintings elusive through a certain amount of editing out of elements and adjusting colors and values. They are rarely straight forward depictions.

Your invited to see the beautiful work our summer campers created this summer at camp. The show will feature painting, drawing, clay sculpture, fiber arts, collage, found object sculpture and crafts from around the world. The Portside’s Summer Arts Camp introduces children ages 4-7 and 8-12 to the fundamentals of arts education through hands-on visual arts and arts integration programming. This year our campers created a larger then life size map of the world and learned about 7 countries and their unique crafts. Please join us on September 6th for this wonderful event.
