(Philadelphia) B. Someday Productions of Kensington/Fishtown, in partnership with Mariana Bracetti Academy High School will present the culmination of a semester’s work with the students at a Public Performance on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. There will be two performances: 4:00pm and 6:00pm. The performance, entitled “Of Mythic Proportions” was created from the 9th-12th grade student’s personal stories about growing up in Kensington and how violence has become a part of their lives. The students will perform their work at The Walking Fish Theatre, 2509 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125 for the community and the general public. In addition to the performance, there will be a short discussion raised by the topics in the stories, with a chance for the audience to interact with the performers. Following the workshop will be a reception with refreshments. The cost is free.
“Of Mythic Proportions” is the 2010 Barrymore Award winner from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for Educational Excellence and Community Service. “B. Someday has been an excellent community partner, not only successfully reaching out to our community of students, but also engaging their parents and other adults in the community. Their impact on the students was incredibly obvious and was felt by all the workshop participants,” says Laura Semmelroth, Coral Street Arts House coordinator.
The Public Performance of Of Mythic Proportions will be a tribute to how using our creative energies, and through the magic of art and live theatre, we can transform our tragedies into something that transcends our daily lives. Please help me by focusing on the tremendous work these students have created and will share with the community, now in these times of tragedy.
“I think all will agree with me that when you see this production, you will see how these young people are creating a space for peace in their lives, and how they consciously choose creating over violence,” states director, Michelle Pauls.
This is the fifth year of residency for B. Someday at Mariana Bracetti Academy, at 2501 Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia. It is the high school for many students in the American Street Empowerment Zone. This area of the city is often fraught with violence, especially among its youth. B. Someday Productions, along with the Patricia Kind Family Foundation, the Seybert Foundation, the Sheila Fortune Foundation, and the Union Benevolent Association, hopes to give the youth of the community an opportunity to express themselves in a creative endeavor and to share with the community positive avenues and alternatives to violence.
