AIGA Philadelphia presents MECRO: CHROMA

AIGA Philadelphia is proud to present CHROMA, new work by Glossblack artist MECRO. The exhibit will be on display at Fishtown’s Bluecadet gallery January 17 – February 28. Many of his large typographic murals and collaborations can be found around the Fishtown neighborhood as well. This body of work is a quiet contemplation of letters; a study of the way they interact with one another and how we as the viewer interpret them. We interpret meaning from typeface daily, often on a subconscious level. The artist has disregarded the formal rigid guidelines of text, reinventing how we view letters, placing them in an abundant and vibrant world of their own. Join us for a First Friday reception on February 2, 2018!

All Nice from Carolyn Suzanne & Hot Abby
6 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Hot Abby is an artist based in the Philadelphia area, originally from Pittsburgh, PA. She works primarily with illustration and photography. Her work aims to materialize the odd and unconscious, a little peek into her personal universe. She strives to illustrate the bizarre via unsettling yet comforting visuals. Through her doom-like fairy tale aesthetic, she aims to wring out the adult in childlike material.

IG @hot__abby

Carolyn Suzanne will soon be completing her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Temple University and believes that her non-traditional entry into the arts imbues her with a unique perspective and invaluable naiveté. As a biologist by education, much of her work revolves around flora and fauna. She also draws inspiration from unique landscapes from her travels and would like to thank her therapist, Shannon.

In her debut show, Carolyn Suzanne explores ideas of love, lust, heartbreak, and uncertainty through vivid images of fantastic creatures and places. The enigma in her work serves to reflect the confusing nature of navigating big questions in life – which themselves may be sometimes seen as tangential to reality. Her works are celebrations of the serendipitous connections we make, recognitions of the complex emotions of love and sexuality, and reminders that life can be fantastic and unexpected. Affixed in the present, everything else is daydreams.

This show will feature illustrations, beverages, and possibly a dance party. You’ve officially got the memo…

Music for the evening will be provided DJ Phonographiq, spinning the deepest of your favorite deep cuts ALL NIGHT.

A variety of beverages will be available all evening thanks to our local beer sponsor, kombucha sponsor Funky Fresh and spirits sponsor Faber.

First Friday: Vessna Scheff

“Through my art, I reclaim who I am, what I have to say, and how I want to say it. Art, has always been my space of freedom. Art allows me to be as big, loud and powerful as I want to be—to encourage others to live boldly, challenge structures, and create experiences that connect across boundaries.

Freedom in art for me involves learning to recognize disenfranchisement, detaching its weight from my shoulders, to let it be carried by collective struggle. I am inspired by stories of resilience and revolution, in particular by Malcolm X, Assata Shakur and Angela Davis.

The freedom I achieve through creating comes from my passion for natural beauty and the power of people. Using a combination of watercolors on wood, watercolor on Dura-lar, poetry and singing, I orchestrate performances where people may challenge their fears, craft their freedom and nurture their empowerment. The nature of my work is as much about self-care as it is about creation.”
